The Laos–China Railway high-speed train is probably the most surprising transport experience in Southeast Asia.

In a country still developing, you suddenly find yourself in a modern 160 km/h electric train, with ultra-clean stations, airport-style security, and comfortable seats.

Since opening in 2021, the Laos–China Railway has completely changed how people travel across Laos, while staying one of the least expensive countries to travel to.

Instead of spending 6–8 hours in a minivan, you can now travel between the main destinations in 1–2 hours.

Overview of the Laos High-Speed Train

The railway connects the capital of Laos to China, crossing the entire northern part of the country.

Main route:

• Vientiane
• Vang Vieng
• Luang Prabang
• Oudomxay
• Boten (border with China)

From Boten, trains continue to Kunming in China.

The line is about 420 km long and trains can reach speeds up to 160 km/h.

This makes it by far the fastest and most comfortable way to travel in Laos.

Travel Times Between Cities

Approximate travel times on the high-speed train:

Route	Travel time
Vientiane → Vang Vieng	~1 hour
Vang Vieng → Luang Prabang	~1 hour
Vientiane → Luang Prabang	~2 hours
Luang Prabang → Boten	~2 hours

Compared to buses or minivans, you save several hours.

Train Classes (Which One Should You Choose?)

There are three seat classes on the high-speed trains.

Economy Class

This is the most popular and best value option.

Seats are comfortable, spacious and similar to modern European trains.

Honestly, economy class is already excellent and more comfortable than most buses in Southeast Asia.

Recommended for most travelers.

First Class

First class offers:

• larger seats
• more legroom
• tray tables
• quieter cabin

It’s a good option if you want extra comfort for longer journeys.

Business Class

Business class is similar to airline business seats:

• reclining seats
• personal lights
• extra privacy

But tickets are significantly more expensive.

For most travelers, economy or first class is more than enough.

How to Buy Train Tickets in Laos (Important)

This is where many travelers make mistakes.

Best option: the official LCR app

The most reliable method is using the official Laos-China Railway app.

Download the app : app store (iPhone) – Play store (Android)

You can:

• book tickets directly
• choose your seat
• pay online
• receive a QR code ticket

Payment methods usually include:

• Visa
• UnionPay
• Alipay
• WeChat Pay

Once booked, you only need to scan your QR code at the station.

When Do Tickets Open?

This is very important.

Tickets usually open:

3 days before departure

During holidays (like Lunar New Year or Lao New Year), they may open 7 days before.

Popular trains sell out quickly, so try to book as soon as sales open.

Should You Use 12GoAsia?

Platforms like 12Go Asia sell tickets in advance and is the best app for overall transportation.

However, for the Laos high-speed train this can be risky.

These platforms do not actually own the tickets.
They only buy them when reservations open.

If the train sells out on the official system, your booking may be cancelled.

That’s why we recommend booking directly through the official LCR app whenever possible.

Important: Train Stations Are Far From the Cities

Most train stations are located outside city centers.

Examples:

• Vientiane station: ~17 km from downtown (30–40 minutes)
• Luang Prabang station: ~12 km from the old town (25–30 minutes)
• Vang Vieng station: about 10 minutes from the center

Plan extra time for transportation to the station.

You can take:

• taxi
• tuk-tuk
• hotel shuttle
• minivan

Arrive Early at the Station

Arrive at least 1 hour before departure.

Why?

You must go through several checks:

1. Passport check
2. Ticket scan
3. Security screening (similar to airports)

During peak seasons or holidays, queues can be long.

Boarding usually opens around 25 minutes before departure.

The train is extremely modern and clean.
